Front-line police officers are spending more time off work than on duty, a startling report reveals today.
Antiquated shift patterns, rest days and holiday mean some are spending up to 20 days more a year at home than catching criminals, the police inspectorate found.
Inspectors also discovered that more uniformed police are on duty on quiet Monday mornings - when they should least be needed - than at any other time of the week.
In some forces, nearly twice as many front-line officers are available at the start of the week than late night on Friday, when levels of drunken street violence rocket.

I find this particularly amusing. The Government want it all ways. The Police like a lot of industries including other emergency services work a predefined shift pattern that rotates on a weekly basis. Generally they get one weekend off a month. Now it appears that they want the Police to take every Monday off but work every Friday and Saturday night. What happened to the work-life balance espoused so frequently by the Government. Also what happens to all the Murders, Rapes, Assaults, Burglaries and Robberies that happen on a Monday, who will deal with them? I think they really need to address the fact that fully trained ‘proper’ police officers are rather thin- on- the- ground. Instead we have a significant amount of PCSOs out on the street and they do not have the same powers as a police officer and unlike the police PCSOs don’t work night shifts.
