Jon VenablesJon Venables, one of James Bulger’s killers, posed online as a mother of an eight-year-old girl offering to sell her daughter for sex, the Old Bailey has heard.

The court heard how the 27-year-old contacted convicted paedophile Leslie Blanchard from Chelmsford posing as a 35-year-old mother called Dawn, who claimed to abuse her eight-year-old daughter.

Venables was jailed for two years after admitting downloading and distributing 57 pornographic images featuring children as young as two.

The court also heard he had had a number of previous brushes with the law since being released from prison on licence in 2001. Those revelations led Denise Fergus, the mother of James Bulger, to question why her son’s killer had not been returned to prison earlier.

The current identity of Venables, who was given a new name after he and Robert Thompson were convicted of the 1993 abduction, torture and murder of two-year-old James, remains protected.

But the Old Bailey heard further limited details of his life since his release.

It emerged that in September 2008 he was arrested on suspicion of affray after he and another man became involved in a drunken street brawl.
